Are Sustainable Materials the Future of Homes?
A decade ago, asking about sustainable materials in a new-build home was a niche request. Today, it's the first question many buyers ask — and developers who haven't caught up are losing listings.
The economics have flipped. Reclaimed timber, responsibly-harvested hardwoods, low-VOC finishes and regenerative materials like hempcrete and mycelium panels are often cost-competitive with conventional alternatives — and dramatically better for indoor air quality.
Beyond the environmental story, there's a real durability case. Many sustainable materials outperform synthetic equivalents on lifespan, which matters when you're buying a home you plan to keep for decades.
If you are building or buying new, ask detailed questions about where materials come from. The answer tells you a lot about how the property was built overall.
